Why is there a Club fee to play lacrosse at Hastings High School?

Difficult choices are made regarding the District #200 budget each year. There is a significant cost to taxpayers when adding two more Varsity sports. For several years, the Hastings school board turned down the request for lacrosse to become sanctioned and play in the Minnesota State High School League. Lacrosse remained a club sport until discussions surfaced again in 2010. In 2011 a compromise agreement was reached for the 2012 season. The school board would allow boys and girls lacrosse to be recognized as Varsity and JV sports if the participating families agreed to fund 100% of the expenses. This was not an ideal situation but it did allow Hastings students to play lacrosse in the MSHSL. For most sports, the high school collects a standard participation fee and the rest is subsidized by taxpayer funds.
