Generate More Revenue by Opening a Pro Shop for Your Business

Account Manager at SportsEngine

November 3, 2023 | 3 minutes, 17 seconds read

Running a youth sports organization involves more than just coaching. It requires managing the entire business, from billing and finances to classes and scheduling. But one often overlooked opportunity to generate additional revenue is through a well-managed pro shop. A pro shop not only serves as a hub for sports equipment and merchandise to help build your brand but can also become a significant source of income.

This blog post will explore some effective strategies to maximize revenue and make your pro shop a thriving part of your youth sports business.

Offer a Variety of Products

To attract customers and boost sales, ensure your pro shop stocks a wide range of products, including equipment, apparel, accessories, and even branded merchandise featuring your organization's logo. Cater to different age groups, skill levels, and price points to meet the diverse needs of your athletes and their families.

Create an Inviting Shopping Environment

Make your pro shop an inviting space that encourages customers to browse and buy. Organize products neatly, create attractive displays, and utilize well-lit areas. Ensure the pro shop is in your lobby/seating area where parents and visitors can browse while waiting for their athlete.

Promote Team Spirit

Tap into the sense of belonging and team spirit by offering customized merchandise for your organization. By providing items that allow athletes to showcase their team pride, you boost sales and strengthen your brand and the sense of community within your organization.

Host Exclusive Sales

Organize periodic sales events or promotions that are exclusive to your pro shop. Offer discounts, bundle deals, or loyalty programs to entice customers to purchase. These events will generate revenue and attract more visitors to your pro shop and potentially more customers to your business.

Leverage Social Media

Harness the power of social media to promote your pro shop and reach a larger audience. Create engaging content showcasing your products, highlight customer testimonials, and special promotions to increase your shop's visibility. Using the Social Feed saves time while promoting your pro shop on multiple platforms at once.

With financial reporting tools and the ability to make sales from the mobile app, utilizing Point of Sale is a no-brainer to maximize sales and profits.

Your pro shop can become a valuable revenue stream for your youth sports organization. You can maximize sales and strengthen your organization’s financial stability by offering various products, creating an inviting shopping environment, and offering promotions.

Midwest Dance Center Uses SportsEngine Motion to Help Create a Home for Dance

Marketing Manager at SportsEngine

November 3, 2023 | 6 minutes, 22 seconds read

Jeffrey Haper owns Midwest Dance Center in Sioux Falls, SD, with his wife, Carla. These days they eat, sleep, and dream of the sport of dance. The funny thing is that it never occurred to them to own a dance studio until three years ago.

Jeffrey always knew he wanted to own a business. He loves coffee and used to dream of opening a small coffee shop or café, but that didn't work out. Then, when his 3-year-old daughter started at Midwest Dance Center, the sport of dance entered his life.

The Journey to Owning a Dance Studio

While entering the world of a new sport as a parent is daunting, Jeffrey knew pretty quickly they were on to something. At the first dance recital for his daughter, Jeffrey saw firsthand what dance could do for a young girl’s strength and confidence, and he wanted that for his daughter.

“The first year we saw her dance we went to one my daughter’s recitals, and I was just blown away by the talent of the young ladies on stage and I thought, WOW if my daughter could grow into something like that it would be unbelievable.”

From there, Jeffrey and Carla were hooked. Midwest Dance Center became their community, so when the previous studio owners were ready to move on, they had an awakening. The Hapers became the owners of Midwest Dance Center.

They’ve built the business to serve approximately 110 families across recreational and competitive programs and classes. Midwest Dance Center also started using SportsEngine Motion to manage its entire business nearly two years ago.

Learn how SportsEngine Motion can be the partner your business deserves >

Why Midwest Dance Center is Special

When Jeffrey’s family was first introduced to Midwest Dance Center, the dance community at the studio immediately accepted them as their own. They became friends with everyone there and grew closer to this new family they were a part of over the years.

When the Hapers took over as owners, they knew they needed to keep the environment and community that they loved.

“We try to promote that family atmosphere and get to know people. We talk to the families that come in to figure out where they’re at and try to provide that home atmosphere.”

One thing Jeffrey loved about the studio before owning it was how creativity and individuality were encouraged. Along with the staff, they’ve stayed true to their nature and made it a comfortable environment for all.

“We’re eclectic, we’re a little crazy at times, and we can get a little weird, but we make sure we have fun while we’re doing this. Then when it’s time to get serious, we can do that too.”

A fun-loving nature mixed with the competitiveness to get serious when needed has helped Midwest Dance Center find a niche in the Sioux Falls community.

The Goals and Challenges Facing Midwest Dance Center

Now nearly three years into owning Midwest Dance Center, Jeffrey wants to start thinking bigger. He has fully embraced the life of a dance studio owner and wants to spread the sport and the organization's values on a larger scale.

A goal they’re shooting for would be opening another studio location in the Sioux Falls area and potentially elsewhere in South Dakota. It’s all in pursuit of exposing more kids to dance.

“Something went off for me when my daughter got into dance and I was able to watch her and other dancers grow. I was able to watch dance change the lives of many girls turning them into strong and confident women.”

“I think dance is so unique because you can express yourself individually and as a team.”

It won’t be easy, though. While the Hapers are happy that there are other options for dance, it is difficult to compete with school programs that can offer a lower price point for their programs. The last several years have been particularly challenging as budgets have tightened for families in their community.

Midwest Dance Center isn’t just competing with other dance programs in their area. Options for many other youth sports have increased, leaving a smaller fraction of families’ time and money that can be spent on dance. Jeffrey has found that the key to keeping members is to be honest with people.

“If someone’s new to dance, we want them to find their spark through dance, but there are so many other options out there. You need to make that connection right away to get them to continue to pursue it as a sport.”

How SportsEngine Motion Helps Jeffrey and Carla Run Midwest Dance Center

One of the significant ways that Jeffrey says they have boosted their business is by managing their studio with SportsEngine Motion technology. Nearly two years ago, Jeffrey was purging his email inbox and stumbled upon an email from a SportsEngine Motion sales representative letting him know they could save time and money using the all-in-one software.

They had been using a program called Studio Director to manage their class registration. Still, they had to use separate platforms to get a mobile app and a website for their business. It took up so much of Jeffrey's time to manage all of the technology and wasn't providing the optimal customer experience.

“We were running three different platforms— we had a studio program in the background, then a website, and a separate mobile app from a 3rd party. It was super time-consuming.”

Once Jeffrey saw that SportsEngine Motion could provide all of those things in one platform, he was sold.

“I love that everything is connected. One platform for the main business features I need.”

“The fact that I can do three main things, website, studio organization, and mobile experience, is a must-have. So that is why I’ve loved SportsEngine Motion so much.”

When Jeffrey signed up with SportsEngine Motion, he was connected with an onboarding representative to help him learn the system and an account manager to be his long-term advocate with the technology. As impressed as he was by the customer service, he says the class management features set SportsEngine Motion apart.

“Having the flexibility to set up classes the way I need to has saved a lot of time. I can’t appreciate enough how flexible the platform is and the functionality built into it.”

We’ve heard how passionate Jeffrey has become about dance and the community he gets to serve every day. SportsEngine Motion is proud to reduce his time spent with administrative tasks and allow him to spread his passion for the sport, grow his business, and help reach Midwest Dance Center’s goals.

“I am so happy to have found a platform that works so well because I was very frustrated before SportsEngine Motion.”

The Revenue Behind Reviews

Account Manager at SportsEngine

November 3, 2023 | 2 minutes, 22 seconds read

What is the first thing you do before you try a new product or program? You read the reviews. In fact, according to a recent study, a new customer is likely to spend 31% more on a business with excellent reviews. Your business should not operate differently from the products and services you look up for yourself. Here are some things reviews can do for your business.

Establish Credibility

First and foremost, people want to know what is good. Parents are likely to read 3 to 5 reviews before signing their children up for anything new, so the more reviews you have - the more likely a new customer will trust your business will provide their child a great experience, which translates to more revenue for you.

Easy Marketing

Most likely, you did not major in marketing, making writing and executing a campaign difficult. But there is nobody better to write up a great campaign than your customers with first-hand experience. 91% of 18-34-year-old consumers trust online reviews as much as personal recommendations. Thus making online reviews vital as that is likely your parent age group.

Gaining Exposure

The more reviews you have, the higher you appear in Google searches. The faster you can appear in Google searches, the less you have to spend on ads, and it will be easier for customers to find your programs.

Gathering more online reviews will save you money and increase your revenue stream. SportsEngine Motion’s Business Publisher is a free tool included in the SportsEngine Motion Suite that will allow businesses to connect their Google My Business account and Facebook Business account to their SportsEngine Motion website. You will be able to update business information, solicit and respond to reviews, and post photos straight to Google and Facebook—all from their Business Publisher dashboard within their website. Thus saving you time and energy – all while putting money back in your pocket.

How to Set and Raise Tuition with Ease

Account Manager at SportsEngine

November 3, 2023 | 3 minutes, 42 seconds read

When was the last time you took a good look at your tuition prices? Evaluating the cost of doing business and your revenue stream is important to ensure continued success. While it is never easy to set or raise tuition prices, the cost of doing business is not etched in stone. Taking the set-and-forget approach to your tuition prices could leave you high and dry – especially in periods of inflation.

Like lesson plans or streaming subscriptions—your tuition rates should be evaluated at least once a year. Remember, you're not taking money just for the sake of it – you charge tuition to continually offer a better service for your customers.

Look at expenses

Before you decide on a rate, the first step is to look at your business expenses. Have your utilities or rent gone up? What does it cost to pay your employees? Reviewing your monthly bottom line is the first step to setting your tuition rates because it establishes a baseline for the lowest amount of money you’d be able to charge and still break even.

The next question you’ll need to ask yourself is how much profit you want to make to invest back into your business. You built your business to improve and grow continually – but you'll need additional funds to achieve your goals. You’ll need to be sure you’re generating enough funds to begin budgeting for your next big project or improvement. Then, of course, you'll need to add in any additional profits you intend to collect for yourself to maintain your personal lifestyle.

Learn how SportsEngine Motion can help you run your gym, studio, or facility

Be unique

My mother always told me to be you and nobody else, and that same rule applies to how your run your business. Don’t copy the business down the road. Your business is not the same as theirs, and while they might be good – you're better! But seriously, comparing what similar facilities do in your area is a great next step. However, remember that copying their tuition prices is not a fool-proof plan for success. Don’t be afraid to charge more than the neighboring facility. If you provide the best service – your customers will pay more.

Timing

Raising tuition is okay; the cost of living goes up, and so does the cost of doing business. Isn't there some old saying... "timing is everything"? This phrase is also true when it comes time to raise tuition. Finding the right time to raise your rates is critical. As long as the new rates are communicated early and effectively, it is easy to raise tuition with the change of a calendar year or new registration cycle.

Communicate

There is no wrong answer when it comes to communicating with your membership. From social media posts to SMS texts, posting your registration and tuition to a website for easy sign-ups and price transparency is one of the easiest ways to get your message out. Another one of our favorite ways to communicate is through Newsletters. Sending a monthly newsletter is an effective solution to communicate everything needed, from registration sessions, FAQs, Athletes of the Month, or special events happening within your walls.

No matter what steps you choose to follow to set your tuition, having an evaluation and communication plan is critical for you to maximize the success and growth of your business. Plus, SportsEngine Motion’s financial reporting tools and communication capabilities will be there to assist you every step of the way.

Account Manager at SportsEngine

November 3, 2023 | 2 minutes, 38 seconds read

With so many social channels available, SportsEngine Motion’s Social Feed makes it easy to post to all your social media accounts at once. From a single dashboard, the Social Feed can be used for more than just fun social posts. Here are some creative ways to take advantage of SportsEngine Motion’s Social Feed to stay engaged with your membership.

Pro Shop Promotions

How often have you purchased a product after it showed up on your Facebook or Instagram feeds? You too can promote items in a similar way on your Social Feed. Give your pro shop a boost by taking pictures of the products and promotions you are offering. Don’t forget to put deadlines on the promotions to create a sense of urgency to purchase.

(Did You Know: you can also manage your pro-shop sales and inventory using SportsEngine Motion’s Point of Sale tool?)

Video Newsletter

No doubt you’re sending newsletters to your families, but have you ever heard, “I never got that email,” or “I get too many emails, so I didn’t see yours?” Providing a video newsletter to supplement an emailed version is a creative way to ensure your important information is being consumed on a platform that works for their family. Your membership could treat your video as a podcast to listen to at anytime.

Important Dates

Make sure you share important dates happening within your walls. Picture day, registration dates, upcoming competitions, and holiday or weather closures. The more information you can post about what's happening within your walls, the fewer phone calls and emails your staff will receive.

Registration Links

Make it easy for your customers (and potential customers!) to register for their next class, clinic, or camp. The easier you can make it for your busy parents to sign up, the faster your rosters will be filled.  Providing the direct URL on your social channels makes their next registration one click away – and can improve your search rankings simultaneously.

Start using the Social Feed

You have seen the benefits the social feed can get you — more traffic, authority, and a better relationship with your audience. Use SportsEngine Motion’s Social Feed to make it even easier to bring all of this power to the palm of your hand.
