Goalkeeper Ashleigh Johnson and captain Maggie Steffens are considered two of the top water polo players in the world; both are Olympic gold medalists and world champions.
Johnson, a Princeton graduate, was the only player on the 2016 Olympic squad not from California. She is heralded for her incredible athleticism; her college coach said she would have been able to start on many of Princeton’s other varsity athletic squads.
Maggie Steffens was the youngest member of the U.S. women’s water polo team in 2012, but was one of the most experienced players on the squad in Rio. She is a two-time Olympic MVP and three-time NCAA champion (Stanford), and led the U.S. to world titles in 2015 and 2017 (NOTE: The U.S. is currently competing for another title at the 2019 World Championships as of July 15, 2019).
