The Mindset Myth: Natural or Bust

Hans Skulstad is the co-founder of the Minnesota Center for Sports and the Mind. He is currently a member of the Board of Directors for the Hobey Baker Foundation and the Minnesota Director of the Hobey Baker Boys High School Character Award. He has been a coach, and served on committees devoted to fair play. He received his Masters in Counseling Psychology and Marriage and Family Therapy from the University of St Thomas.

Here, Skulstad describes the common misconception that either you are a natural or a bust. This myth has to do with having a fixed mindset or a growth mindset. It can be detrimental to kids to classify them early as ""a natural"" or ""a bust."" Natural can end up feeling entitled and feeling like their path could be easier. A bust tend to feel as though everything is going to be difficult and that their path to their future is going to be challenging. Neither of these exist and are examples of a fixed mindset. "
