Athletes to Watch: Nathan Adrian

The 2012 Olympic gold medalist in the 100m freestyle swam to two individual bronze medals and two relay golds in Rio. Tokyo will be the fourth Games for the eight-time Olympic medalist.

The affable 6-foot-5 Cal grad was edged by teammate Caeleb Dressel in the 100m free – and missed the 50m final – at the 2017 World Championships, a competition that Dressel dominated, and made the 2019 World Championship team only as part of a relay.

In January of 2019, Adrian announced that he had been diagnosed with testicular cancer. The prognosis was good, but his treatment still required two surgeries and time away from the pool. He said he was back to full training in March 2019.
