Background
Ostby, a 1986 graduate of Roseau High School, located in the far reaches of northwest Minnesota and just a few miles from the Canadian border. He still lives in his hometown and works in neighboring Warroad as the CAD (Computer Aided Drafting) Systems Administrator at Marvin Windows. He’s also been a local radio personality for 26 years, most recently providing the color commentary for Roseau boys’ and girls’ hockey games for KRWB (AM-1410), one of two Roseau radio stations that regularly broadcast local hockey games. Ostby built an immensely popular site devoted to Roseau High School boys’ hockey in the late 1990s and merged it with the town’s youth hockey site a couple years ago.
What he does
Ostby serves as the de facto curator of all things Roseau hockey, which means he has unearthed pretty much every score, statistic and factoid of note over the years. One of his recent projects was the compilation of every score of every boys' hockey game between Roseau and Warroad dating back to 1945. The project entailed recruiting help to dig through newspaper archives in both towns and page through yearbooks from both schools. The boys’ hockey rivalry between the two schools is widely regarded as one of the nation’s most storied in any sport in any state. Ostby also has taken over many of the duties related to the youth hockey portion of the site, including posting registration notices, information on the ongoing fall skills camp and setting up the 2014-15 season.
Making his mark:
Ostby has kept the proud tradition of Roseau hockey alive (the Rams have won seven state titles) by documenting all of the Rams’ achievements over the years. That includes multiple tables that list everything from Roseau’s dominance in the Section 8 tournament (34 championships dating to 1946) to alumni with Division I experience (dozens upon dozens of players).
