Joyce Cunningham creates information-filled site for Denver-area school

NAME:
Joyce Cunningham
SITE:
Littleton High School Athletics
POSITION:
Athletic secretary, webmaster
USE OF PLATFORM:
Registration, Sitebuilder
BACKGROUND:
Cunningham, always quick with a smile and laugh, grew up in Saskatchewan and spent 20 years in Toronto before moving to the Denver area. She’s in her fourth year as the athletic secretary at Littleton High School, which has an enrollment of about 1,200 in grades nine through 12. Cunningham says she took the job with “no knowledge” of sports, although she did play recreation badminton and volleyball growing up. “In high school I was more of a cheerleader than a player,” she said. Cunningham’s experience as a business analyst and software tester and trainer for a nationwide trucking company in Canada has helped her become fluent with the SportsEngine platform in just a matter of months (Littleton’s new site launched in July). “I am used to figuring out things and trying to break software,” she said with a laugh. Cunningham’s husband, Kevin, is an IT business systems manager, and he offers his input when Joyce asks. “I throw ideas at him, and he’ll tell me what he thinks,” she said. One of Kevin's ideas, Joyce said, was to embed a Google Translate on the Littleton website as an aid to the school's large population of spanish-speaking students and parents.
WHAT SHE DOES:
Cunningham created individual pages for 21 sports, giving access to each team’s coach. She ensured that registration sessions were available for all of the school’s fall sports and even created a PDF of registration instructions. She hands out hard copies of the instructions to students when they have questions at school. Speaking of questions, Cunningham created a dynamic Frequently Asked Questions page using anchors in a way that allowed her to add photos, documents, links and other page elements to the answers portion of the page. She created a Lion Pride graphic using a collection of sports action photos, then placed it at the bottom of every page on the site using mirrored layout containers. She built a Littleton High School Spirit Wear page that has photos and descriptions of the available gear and an order form at the bottom of the page. All orders are routed directly to the Littleton booster club.
MAKING HER MARK:
Cunningham created a Coach’s Resources section that includes Coach’s FAQ and Registration Info pages. The section’s landing page lists important dates, links to forms and used the tab element to organize references (links), tutorial videos and coaching requirements.
