Intro:

Canadian Beer League is an adult hockey league that welcomes beginners and intermediate-level players to practice, compete, and have fun on the ice, regardless of skill level. Started in 2020 as a simple hockey practice, the Canadian Beer League has grown to include four leagues across 17 cities in Ontario. It uses SportsEngine as an all-in-one payment, registration, and team communication solution.

Challenge:

Lack of Features and Poor Customer Support Lead Canadian Beer League to Search for New Team Management Platform

Pete Munro has always loved hockey. In fact, he loves it so much, he commuted an hour and a half to practice with friends in an adult league. But after Pete and his wife Shelby moved to a new city, Pete was left without a team to play on. They decided to start their own hockey league for adults, and that’s how Canadian Beer League was formed in 2020.

Since then, the Canadian Beer League has grown exponentially, moving from just offering practices only to now offering more competitive game-playing leagues. As it expanded into more cities within Ontario, it became clear to Pete and Shelby that they needed a platform to support their team management. “We wanted to elevate our leagues to offer a more premium product,” explained Shelby, Director of Operations and the driving force behind the League’s administration.

They selected a popular competitor platform and began using it for registrations. But after just a few months of use, they realized it wasn’t providing what the Canadian Beer League needed. The solution lacked essential features like individual player standings, and players complained about getting too many marketing emails from the platform. “It was also a big process to get on the website,” Shelby explained. “We wanted to have an app that could be everything for everyone.”

Besides the lack of functionality, the poor customer support caused delays when Canadian Beer League experienced problems. “It felt like we were just another customer. There wasn’t a lot of support when we needed help,” said Shelby.

Then, a co-worker recommended SportsEngine to Canadian Beer League Co-Founder Pete Munro. Shelby said, “After talking with Tim at SportsEngine, we realized that they had everything we needed, so we made the switch.”

Solution:

Stellar Customer Service and Easy-to-Use App Eases the Transition to SportsEngine

Pete and Shelby began working with Tim at SportsEngine to move to SportsEngine’s platform, even though they had already paid for an entire year of service with the previous platform. The move was surprisingly simple, thanks to SportsEngine’s excellent customer service.

“Tim was so helpful. He was really there for us,” said Shelby. “It was a step above in terms of the customer service. He was able to walk us through everything we needed, and he was very patient and helpful with everything.”

Shelby and Pete had plenty of questions for Tim and the rest of the team at SportsEngine, but never had to wait long for a response. Whether Canadian Beer League reached out through emails, calls, or texts, SportsEngine’s responsiveness made the switch painless, despite the fact that Canadian Beer League was changing platform providers in the middle of its summer season.

Now, Canadian Beer League has the comprehensive solution it was looking for, and the players couldn’t be happier with the easy-to-use app. “All our members register through SportsEngine for our leagues and practices,” explained Shelby. “From there, they use the player statistics, the financial side of registration, everything like that. We direct all our players to the app, and once rosters are created, I send that communication out on SportsEngine as well.”

Shelby also has some advice for other sports leagues that are considering adopting a platform like SportsEngine for an all-in-one management solution. “Make sure you do the research. Know what your business needs and what solutions there are for you to meet your goals before you jump in and choose a platform.”

SportsEngine Brings Improved Visibility and Communication to Players Across 17 Cities

The summer season was a test for Canadian Beer League to see if it could gain more players and move into more cities while still providing the support its players, teams, and leagues needed. Maintaining that level of organization across so many cities required a versatile solution that was easy for players and the administrative staff to use. Since implementing SportsEngine, the season was a resounding success.

SportsEngine makes it easy to save players’ information for any program they want to register with and simplifies team roster creation. Players can set their attendance for the leagues that play games so the rest of the team knows who will be there and if the team needs to find subs before game time. “We want to make sure everyone’s setting their attendance, and we wouldn’t be able to do that without SportsEngine. In the past, that was a huge challenge for us,” said Shelby.

The team communication feature also builds camaraderie as teammates discuss upcoming games or get to know each other in between games and practice time. Players can track their individual statistics and see how they rank against others, a significant improvement from the previous provider.

“Ultimately, we’re improving our leagues by offering these features, like tracking statistics,” said Shelby. “SportsEngine helps us do that.”

Conclusion:

Canadian Beer League Plans Future Expansion Through its Partnership with SportsEngine

Canadian Beer League has big plans to continue expanding. “We’re in 17 cities now, and when we expand into a new city, our plan is for practices to be the framework for our programs,” said Shelby. “The goal is to be a national brand all over Canada.”

And thanks to SportsEngine, Canadian Beer League has a flexible platform to support its growing operations. “If we do continue to grow, we already have everything in SportsEngine,” Shelby said. “I can’t say enough about how wonderful the customer service has been. Everything from sales to our account manager, everyone has just been so helpful.”

Flag Star Football is a flag football league serving over 14,000 youths in the Washington, DC metro area. It uses SportsEngine to manage all aspects of league administration, including rostering, waivers, and team communication. Since beginning to use SportsEngine, league registration has grown by 40%.

Challenge:

Growing league searches for one-stop shop for league administration

Flag Star Football provides year-round flag football programming for youths from kindergarten to 12th grade. But with a small staff and thousands of players, it needed an easy way to manage registrations, rostering, and team communication while also ensuring all its 600+ coaches and volunteers had approved background checks.

Prior to using SportsEngine, Flag Star Football used SI Play for player registration. After SportsEngine acquired SI Play, FlagStar Football looked at other providers, but ultimately decided to make the switch to SportsEngine.

“SportsEngine was already familiar with what our needs were,” explained Nikki Turner, Director of Operations at Flag Star Football. “It’s a one-stop shop for everything—registrations, scheduling, rostering, the communication. Everything you need to do to run a league, you can do it through this one system.”

Solution:

Flag Star Football switches to SportsEngine HQ for all-in-one management

Moving to the new platform was a simple process, thanks to SportsEngine’s fantastic customer service. “They took the reins for us and helped create the registration platforms step by step,” said Turner. “SportsEngine’s customer service is a huge selling point for us.”

The biggest challenge Flag Star Football faced was getting approximately 10,000 existing users to create new accounts with SportsEngine. While that was a challenging process, the end result has been a major benefit to players and parents.

Instead of going to different websites or locations to access information, parents can now see everything in a single location. “The app makes everything really easy for the end users,” explained Turner. “Once they download the app, they have their entire schedule, the roster, everything they need.”

SportsEngine’s customer service made the transition process smooth and painless. “We’re such a large organization, and we have a lot of random things that come up,” Turner said. “I’m able to easily access someone at any time, either through the chat feature or through my direct contact. Someone is always there to assist with anything that pops up.”

Flag Star Football grows by 40%, reaches key markets, ensures player safety with SportsEngine HQ

Now, the team at Flag Star Football can handle every aspect of team management with just the SportsEngine platform. “You can do all the scheduling, the rostering, all the communication, everything that you need to do to run a league. You can do it through one system, and everything syncs together,” said Turner.

When players are ready to register for a new season or event, they simply log into their SportsEngine account and all of their personal information is already in the system, making registration a breeze. Discount codes, payments, and every aspect of management is handled on a single platform.

Flag Star Football has also leveraged SportsEngine’s reporting to help it expand its programs. Reports are as general or as detailed as users need them to be, and Turner and her team use the information to expand registrations for certain geographical areas or age groups.

“When we’re looking to go to a new market, we can isolate people who are from that area,” explained Turner. “If we need to fill out a certain age group, we run a report of people who are in a certain grade or a certain age group. We can reach out to those groups directly through SportsEngine and encourage them to sign up for the season.” These tools have helped Flag Star Football accelerate its growth. Since beginning to use SportsEngine in 2022, Flag Star football has grown by 40%. It served nearly 14,000 players in 2024.

Player safety is a major priority for any program, and the size of Flag Star Football’s roster makes it even more challenging to ensure players stay safe. But with SportsEngine, players fill out information about allergies or medical issues and sign any needed waivers during the registration process. This ensures vital information is collected and immediately available for coaches and volunteers without requiring paperwork or extra steps.

With over 600 coaches and volunteers, SportsEngine’s background checks are another important aspect of player safety. “We can see through SportsEngine which volunteers are approved,” explained Turner. “If anyone is flagged, we can see that in SportsEngine and we also get a separate email, so we’re able to follow up on those right away.”

Conclusion:

Flag Star Football aims to grow all-girls league and overall player registration with SportsEngine

The addition of men and women’s flag football to the 2028 Olympics is an exciting opportunity for Flag Star Football, and one they hope to capitalize on with SportsEngine.

“We’re hoping to grow our girls’ flag football programming now that it’s an Olympic sport,” said Turner. “Colleges now offer women’s flag football, and a lot of high schools in this area have added it to their programming. We had about 300 girls that played in the all-girls league this past season, and we really want to get more girls involved so they can go on and play in high school and college.”

As Flag Star Football continues growing, it will use SportsEngine to simplify season management for both its staff and its players. “I’d highly recommend SportsEngine to any size of league, small to large,” said Turner.
